Resources for School Owners

Starting a college or university requires obtaining a state license that will allow your institution to offer associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees. The application varies depending on the state where you are planning on establishing your campus.

Online institutions are also required to obtain a license to operate. In general, the new college or university application process includes the following steps:  

  • Prepare a business plan and projected budget
  • Register the school corporation
  • Open the institution's bank account
  • Lease or own a campus location 
  • Obtain city/county occupational certificate
  • Secure financial resources
  • Purchase instruction and operation equipment
  • Secure services and affiliation agreements
  • Obtain board approvals when applicable
  • Hire faculty and administrative personnel
  • Contract a student information system (SIS)
  • Contract online library services and resources
  • Contract a certified librarian 
  • Contract an online learning platform (LMS) 
  • Submit the application, exhibits, and fees​
  • Satisfy all application review requests
